The Challenge
Greek House Chefs provides fraternities and sororities with high-quality food service prepared by an in-house chef. In order to best serve the students, Greek House Chefs ensures students can customize their choices and communicate about what they like and dislike. Greek House Chefs facilitates this through a mobile app, but Greek House Chefs’ existing mobile application lacked key functionality and flexibility. Greek House Chefs partnered with Shift to quickly strategize and develop a new version of the app that could launch in time for the new school year — a timeframe of just six weeks.

APPROACH
With the tight timeline, Greek House Chefs worked closely with Shift to prioritize the critical features for launch knowing additional features could be built and pushed out iteratively after launch. Shift worked swiftly to strategize the most effective ways to deliver a high-quality product, and kept UI design explorations to a minimum by leveraging Greek House Chefs’ existing branding.
Shift also selected tech stacks that allowed for fast development. For mobile app development, Shift recommended leveraging React Native — a framework that enabled development to occur more quickly since a large portion of the code could be shared by both iOS and Android operating systems. For the web-based admin portal, Shift selected Ruby on Rails for the web-based admin portal — a mature, proven and trusted framework that allows for rapid development and the ability to get to market more quickly while still ensuring a scalable product.
The Solution
The solution for Greek House Chefs included both iOS and Android mobile apps as well as the development of a web-based admin portal. The mobile apps allow college students to view and interact with meal menus for their sorority and fraternity houses, request meal alternatives and provide feedback to chefs. The mobile app also has a chef user role that provides house chefs with a suite of tools to help in the planning and preparation of meals. Within the web-based admin portal, Greek House Chefs is able to easily manage the operations of the business.
